    October 6 & 13 & 20, 2021   | 4:00pm-6:00pm ET

This is a workshop about making textile sculptures out of the STUFF of our everyday lives. Nothing bought, nothing ordered except for some wire for the 3rd class)—only what you can find!  It is a time to pull out your old socks, your ripped and stained T-shirts, the long unworn clutter at the back of your bureau drawers. Help your partner out by using their old ties and shoelaces, suspenders and more.  It is time to make space in our lives. Let’s use our hearts, and our hands and clean out our closets at the same time. I will lead you through a series of exercises and show you some simple techniques that you can use to transform the ordinary into extraordinary sculptures. In the 3rd class we will begin to incorporate wire structures into our work. Our challenge will be to take bits and pieces from our everyday world and make them into art. I hope you will join us.

Virtual One-Part Demonstration Workshop using the Zoom Platform

    October 24th, 2021 | 1:00-3:00 p.m. ET

In this workshop, participants will discover the challenges and advantages of building solid on an armature, a versatile technique ideal for sculpting animals, human figures, and other complex forms.  Using the animal portrait as our focus, we will delve into how to plan and build a pipe armature and mass in a sculpture while paying attention to gesture and proportion.  We will then discuss how to cut apart the piece, hollow it out, put it back together, and add finishing details such as fur texture, facial features, and decorative ornamentation.  We will cover sculpting accurate facial anatomy and explore how to use facial features to create compelling and expressive animals.  We will also touch on clay, tools, and firing techniques.

  • Wooden Lampmaking with Veneer and Fiberglass with Jamie Herman October 16 & 23, 2021 4:00 -6:00PM ET

Wooden Lampmaking with Veneer and Fiberglass

Virtual Two-Part Demonstration Workshop using the Zoom Platform

    October 16 & 23, 2021 | 4:00 - 6:00 PM ET

Students will learn how to reinforce wood veneer with fiberglass to make rigid sheets for use in lampmaking. These sheets will allow enough light through to give off a warm glow while highlighting the natural beauty of the wood’s grain. This technique can be used to make all sorts of lamp designs, but I will demonstrate how to make a simple lamp from start to finish. The class will be mostly demo-based because there is glue that needs a long time to set.

*The class is appropriate for those with very little fine woodworking experience/knowledge. There are a few cuts that need to be made with a circular saw/jigsaw or similar tool. Access to a table saw makes things much easier and much more accurate, but is not required. Physical strength is not important, other than some hand strength to turn clamps.

    October 23rd, 2021 | 1:00-3:00 p.m. ET

She'll demonstrate building solid, creating unique sculptural edges, utilizing bisque forms to make new shapes and designs, pounding out forms with handmade tools, adding texture to surfaces, as well as how she builds and refines her signature bronze glazed bowls with round bottoms and ripped natural edges. Erica approaches her work with an intuitive directness that works with the materials' inherent properties to create pieces that feel both ancient and modern. She will share a brief presentation on her work and life as an artist, as well as drying, firing and glazing methods, and a handout with materials, clays, firing schedules, and glaze recipes.

“Interlacing is the term for all fabric constructions in which each element passes over and under elements that cross its path.  It is both a concept and a system- or, rather, a system of systems.” -Jack Lenor Larson, Interlacing

This course is an introduction to techniques and applications of interlaced structures, sculptural forms and material manipulation.  Thinking broadly about interlacing as a concept, the class will learn construction methods including looping, knotting and plaiting, as well as deconstruction techniques like gathering and wrapping.  Material effects, color, and scale will be discussed and explored.  Participants are encouraged to play and experiment-discovering the limits and potentials of interlacing through both traditional and alternative methods and materials.
