Students will leave the class with their bent form, and jig that they can reuse for their own projects.

This hands-on whittling class will give the student the basic tools to carve three dimensional shapes. Our projects will be realized with a carving knife (and a set of small rasps). We will practice sharpening techniques to give our knife the proper edge to cut wood. We will learn and be trained in the common carving procedures, knife handling and cutting techniques to safely form an animal or two out of Basswood. In addition, I will demonstrate the use of a bandsaw as a tool to assist in the preparation of wood for carving. If time permits we will also discuss design ideas for those who intend to extend their carving horizon beyond the available educational and commercial carving  patterns.

I use embroidery as a meditative process to engage with grief. In this workshop, you will learn basic embroidery stitches and create a non-representational composition on fabric. Together, we will experiment with allowing the fabric to hold some of the weight of the complex emotions. Participants are encouraged to sew on a piece of clothing or other material connected to your particular grief (death of a loved one, systemic injustice, lost or altered relationships, career changes, dreams that had to be let go, etc.). In addition to creating together, we will hold space for sharing memories and collective mourning.

*No prior experience needed - beginners welcome! Youth ages 10 and up are invited to attend and create collaboratively with an adult.

We'll investigate the structure of woven and knitted fabrics, and explore the meaning of stitching and mending in the modern world. We'll learn together over two sessions on Zoom, with time in between for practice and questions.
