Carolina Sephra Reyes is a metalsmith and herbalist living in San Miguel, New Mexico. Her main body of work revolves around the fusion of metal and plants, and the cultivation of both the fields of metalsmithing and herbalism.
She received her BFA from New Mexico State University in 2015, and her MFA from East Carolina University in 2019. During her time at ECU, Carolina co-chaired the 2019 ECU Metals Symposium, and worked as a gallery director for the Mendenhall Student Center Gallery.
Her research in Herbalism continues, using her works as teaching points for herself and her audience.
This line of work uses elements from de Materia Medica, a larger body of work that examines the nature of herbal remedies and implements in Western culture. Scalloped edges reference the edges found on various types of leaves, while light, pastel colors allude to the first sign of greenery or budding plants.
Each piece is hand pierced from copper and enameled using a torch-firing technique that involves applying the flame directly to the surface of the enamel. This produces unique, unpredictable effects that echo the organic growing patterns found in nature and plants.
