Natural Dye + Textile Collage: Collecting Memory In Place

with Sofia Gonzalez
VirtualTwo day Demonstration Workshop using the Zoom Platform

July 31 & August 1 | Time: 1:00-3:00p.m. ET

Join Sofia V. Gonzalez from the comfort and safety of your home for a virtual natural dye workshop! This class is a continuation of Sofia’s Introduction to Natural Dyes class. Basic knowledge of textiles and natural dyes will help students make the most of the class. We’ll be (virtually) dyeing scraps of natural, found textiles and yarn to be used in a textile collage and embroidery.

If you purchase the supply kit, each participant will receive various pieces of pre-washed and pre-mordanted silk, cotton and linen, aluminum sulfate, iron modifier, wool and cotton yarn, various fabric samples to experiment with, embroidery hoop, and needle.

Students are asked to collect plant materials from around their home, either outside or in the kitchen! Plants may include: red cabbage, yellow or red onion skins, avocado pits, herbs (mint, rosemary, lavender, etc.), and any barks or hulls you may find around your house. If you unsure if your collect plant is safe to boil, reach out before the class! Plants like eucalyptus bark, walnut hulls, fig leaves, pomegranate rinds, and loquat leaves make a great dye source.

Participants will need to have on hand 2 pots to boil plant matter in water, wooden or stainless steel spoon to stir dye pot and fabric, a mixing bowl to soak fabric in, and pH Neutral dish soap to rinse fabric after dyeing (any dish soap with out dye in it). We will work together as a group through the steps to create a natural dye bath and prep fabric to dye.

Day 1 of the workshop we will dye fabric pieces and samples together as a group, working together to discover new colors, mordant fabric while dyeing, and adding any modifiers.

After our dyed fabric has dried overnight, on Day 2 we will explore textile collage using hand sewing techniques and machine sewing (if you have a sewing machine on hand), as well as simple embroidery stitches.
After this two-day workshop, we will have captured the colors and marks of a specific place and time together.
