Bowls and Surface

with Sam Moomeyer
Virtual One-Part Demonstration Workshop using the Zoom Platform

October 17th, 2021 | 4:00-6:00 p.m. ET

In this workshop, students will learn how to make a bowl from start to finish, focusing on both form and surface at the same time. Using a drape mold combined with coiled and pinched elements, I'll demonstrate how to make a shallow bowl and how to use inclusions and layers of washes to create surface depth without glaze. Form and surface are intertwined from the beginning as we go over how to stain the clay body itself, form the bowl, add the inclusions while the piece is still wet, and how to think about textures to catch washes to create more contrast later on. We’ll go over my mid-range electric firing process in detail all the way to sanding and how to pay attention to the little details along the way that can make all the difference in a finished pot.
