Learn and understand fundamental and essential information about vitreous enameling that will allow you to successfully enamel on metals and forms of your choice.
The focus in this class will be on creating a foundation of basic information, providing resources and addressing individual questions.
The demonstrations, discussion and information provided are all intended to help participants – at every level of experience - successfully move forward with their enameling practice.
Discussion and demonstration will include particulars such as...
  • enamel types and purposes
  • metals to enamel onto
  • metal and enamel preparation
  • opaque vs. transparent colors
  • grain size choices - when to use which size grain for which purpose
  • sifted vs. wet packed applications
  • kiln options
  • what’s important and how to choose a kiln
  • the importance of test tiles and options for making them
  • accessory tools needed - trivets, firing racks, and other helpful tools
  • supplemental enameling materials
  • information about enamel "behavior and interactions" - a.k.a Fusion
  • Flow/Softening Point/COE
  • how to achieve successful results and reduce the number of pieces that end up in a scrap box

While there will be demonstrations that can be replicated in your own studio, it is not essential that you already have (or purchase) enameling equipment, tools and materials in order to benefit from what is presented.
This class will provide the novice participant with solid information so they can confidently begin enameling – and – the individual who has been enameling for a while with knowledge that solidifies their practice.
There will be time for questions and a Private Face Book page for questions, answers and further discussion between classes and for two weeks after class is over.
  • participants must have the ZOOM video platform dowloaded on a computer or phone to participate
  • students are encouraged to work in between sessions
  • see suggested materials list here
  • students will receive access to the recorded demonstrations for up to two weeks
