June, 2015

Dear Corporate Friend of Health Legacy of Cleveland,

Thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate donors, HLC has raised over $600,000 since 2004 for scholarships and pipeline development activity through fund raising and our major biannual event, the Health Legacy of Cleveland Award and Scholarship Dinner. HLC has supported over 200 students through pipeline programming and provided grant support to over 100 students for graduate and undergraduate matriculation.

We seek your support of the 2015 Health Legacy of Cleveland Award and Scholarship Dinner being held on Sunday evening, October 11, 2015 at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven in Mayfield Hts., Ohio.

Sister Judith Ann Karam Sister Judith Ann Karam, Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, and the immediate past President and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System, will receive the Health Legacy of Cleveland Award for Excellence. Sister Judith is also the incoming President of Catholic Healthcare Association (CHA). Since 1851, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine have been serving the Cleveland community becoming the first with public health nurses visiting the sick in their homes. In 1865, they founded St. Vincent Charity Hospital, where the first open-heart surgery was performed in the Midwest. The Sisters of Charity Health System has worked tirelessly to combat disparity and help to mitigate the social determinants of health in our community, and we are delighted to honor this legacy.

Dr. Regina Benjamin Dr. Regina Benjamin, the 18th Surgeon General of the United States, will deliver the keynote address. Dr. Benjamin is an African American physician and a former vice admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. She previously directed a nonprofit primary care medical clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, and served on the Board of Trustees for the Morehouse School of Medicine.

Several individuals will be recognized at the 2015 dinner and in print, for their work in the greater Cleveland community to combat health disparity and health inequity. It will be our distinct pleasure to introduce The Health Legacy of Cleveland Health Equity Honor Roll of individuals to the Cleveland Community.

Individual open seating is $150. Corporate tables start at the $1,500. Corporate sponsorships are encouraged.

HLC needs your continued support to provide scholarships and purposeful, public programming aimed at inspiring Cleveland area students to become physicians and dentists through education. We continue to support those medical and dental students who want to return to the greater Cleveland area to practice.

In addition to the HLC partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Department of Diversity for the Charles R. Drew Saturday Academy pipeline program, now in its eighth year, our newest program is the Jefferson J. Jones, DMD Health Legacy of Cleveland Summer Pre-Dental Mentorship and Research Program in partnership with Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. The first of its kind in Cleveland for minority high school and college rising juniors, the program is named in honor of the great mentoring legacy of Dr. Jefferson J. Jones, DMD.

We invite and look forward to your participation in this major dinner event on Sunday, October 11, 2015. Please contact a board member or Cynthia Clark, Executive Director at (216) 621-1933 regarding your early sponsorship inquiries. Formal invitations will be sent out in late July, 2015.
