School’s Cool provides backpacks, school supplies, and uniforms to children participating in the education enrichment programs at Banyan in the Phillips neighborhood of south Minneapolis. In 1999, Alison Johnson, a St. Bart’s parishioner, recognized that these basic needs had to be met for Banyan’s children to succeed. Over the years, St. Bart’s parishioners and others have continued to organize this effort, support children, and donate items and money for School’s Cool. Donors provide the tools, and Banyan provides the educational and community support.
The Minneapolis four-year high school graduation rate is 75%, yet 98% of Banyan youth graduate from high school and are ready for college.
