This course is for anyone who works with clients to support behaviour change in Primary Care, the Local Authority or the Volutary Sector. 


This course introduces the core principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and provides practive in the essential skills which can be applies to a range of settings. 


Motivational Interviewing is a client centred approach to explore and elicit motivation and behaviour change. It has been shown to be effective in a number of areas, such as stopping smoking, weight management, physical activity levels and control of blood sugar/blood pressure. 


The training is participative and learners will have plenty of opportunities to practive the tools and strategies which help make motivational ivterviewing such a successful approach. 


This course could help you: 


  • describe the spirit of Motivational Interviewing (MI) 
  • describe the role of ambivalence in behaviour change 
  • recognise key client speech including 'Change talk' and 'Sustain talk' 
  • demonstrate the use of key communication skills (OARS) 
  • provide information using an MI approach
  • use strategies to support behaviour change 
  • relate learning to own practice
