Mountie Alumni, Matt Zwicker, has taken his family's battle with pancreatic cancer and used it to fuel his desire to make a difference.
To do this, he turned to what he loves most:
Family and Football.
In 2017, the first ever TACKLE Pancreatic Cancer game was held at Mount A.
This year TWO games, in TWO provinces will take place on the same day.
Join us Saturday, October 20th, 2018 at Mount Allison and at Bishop's University to TACKLE Pancreatic Cancer!
I graduated from Mount Allison University in 2017. In my time at Mount A, I had the opportunity to play on the Mount Allison Varsity Football Team for four years. Playing football at Mount Allison is truly a special experience. Almost everyone that has ever played there describes it as a family, and this is true. While my team became my family away from home, my real family embraced them and attended almost every game. This meant that, at times, they were travelling across multiple provinces to support me and my teammates.
On December 22nd, 2016, just before the start of my last semester at Mount A, my family experienced a big change. My dad, Darren (arguably the biggest Mount Allison football fan), found out that he had a pancreatic tumor. Shortly after that, we found out that it was cancerous. This diagnosis was extremely difficult for my family. We know now that only 7% of Canadians will survive the disease (even less in the Maritime provinces) and that the median survival time post-diagnosis of 4 – 17 months. To combat or “tackle” this disease, you need to act quickly.
Going through this experience and seeing the lack of education, funding, and general knowledge surrounding pancreatic cancer, I decided I wanted to make a difference. A couple of months after my dad’s diagnosis, I reached out to Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society and we developed the plan for this event. At the “Tackle Pancreatic Cancer” game, both of my families will come together in support of a great cause. The game will take place at Mount Allison University on October 7th to raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research.
This disease doesn’t affect just my family. It has and will continue to affect thousands of Canadians until we are able to fight back, spread awareness, and fund research. This campaign sets out to do both. For those of you who are able to donate: any amount helps and we are so thankful for your donations. I encourage all of you to read up on pancreatic cancer, understand the warning signs, and educate your families.
Everyone can help, and everything makes a difference.
Learn the signs. Join the cause. Be the difference.
