WHO IS THE FUTURE HOMEOWNER?
The 2017 CommUNITY Build new home will be for Latasha, her 14-year- old daughter and her son’s two-year-old daughter. Latasha currently lives in Concord and is looking for a change of scenery and a fresh start from her current situation. Her rental home is in disrepair with no central heating or air, broken windows and doors, mold and several other issues. Latasha’s current location is also a constant reminder of her mother’s death in September 2016. Her mother lived just a few blocks away and was murdered in her home. A change of location will help with Latasha’s continued healing. This new home will also be located closer to Latasha’s job and will be a great place for her daughter to begin early college.
WHAT WILL WE DO?
On your work day, your team will have the opportunity to learn new skills and work alongside of public servants, community volunteers and the partner families who are currently in our program. The goal is for each element of this build - fundraising, volunteer groups, construction, meals, and the home dedication - to be organized by the local community. If you are part of a team but don't want to volunteer on the construction site there are plenty of other opportunities such as providing meals, selling T-shirts, administrative assistance and financial contributions.
WHERE WILL THE HOME BE BUILT?
The CommUNITY Build home will be constructed in the Carver community located off of Cannon Boulevard, close to the North Carolina Research Campus & downtown Kannapolis.
WHEN WILL THE HOUSE BE BUILT?
The build is scheduled to start in May and will be completed in August (weather dependent).
WHO CAN JOIN MY TEAM?
The intent of CommUNITY Build is to bring together first responders, healthcare professionals, educators, and elected officials with community volunteers. We encourage you to enlist colleagues in your field to join your team. Community volunteers may be individuals or groups from area businesses/organizations.
WHAT IS THE “BUY A SHIRT, BUILD A HOME” CAMPAIGN?
The purpose of the “Buy a Shirt, Build a Home” campaign is three-fold: to raise awareness of the need for affordable housing solutions in our community, to raise funds for the CommUNITY Build home and to acknowledge the collaborative nature of the people and organizations in Cabarrus County. The campaign begins in early May and ends on Monday, July 3, 2017. During this time period, teams are encouraged to collect orders for “Unity in the Community” t-shirts. T-shirts will be given in exchange for a minimum $10 donation that will go toward the cost of the CommUNITY Build home. Shirts will be available for pick up or delivery July 31 – August 3. On Friday, August 4, 2017 everyone who purchases a shirt will be encouraged to post photos on social media wearing the shirts at work or in the community as a sign of support for our community and our neighbors in need.
If you cannot be a part of the build but would like to support the campaign, you can sign up to be a Campaign Captain. Campaign Captains are asked to sell 25 or more t-shirts. We are seeking Campaign Captains from area churches, schools, hospitals and other businesses. If you would like to be a Campaign Captain for t-shirt sales in your organization, please contact Shanell Smaw at firstname.lastname@example.org.
