Fit for Life
Help us fund bicycles for our students at Ledyard High School
My name is Kathryn Lyon and I am a physical education teacher at Ledyard High School. I am also the adapted physical education (APE) teacher and Unified Sports Coach. I am asking for 6 new Schwinn 24” Meridian Adult Tricycles that would be used specifically with my adapted physical education students. I see APE students every other day for 83 minutes for the entire school year. During each class we spend half of the class with a focus on improving cardiovascular fitness. Cycling is fun, life-long, effective, and a low impact method of cardiovascular exercise.
My students in APE are faced daily with challenges mentally, physically, and emotionally that are far greater than any that I have ever endured. I understand and recognize as a physical education teacher the importance of cardiovascular exercise for individuals, regardless of their disabilities and/or limitations. Funding of this project would ensure that APE Ledyard High School students could improve their cardiovascular fitness levels in a challenging, safe, and fun environment. I have included a list of some health benefits associated with regular cycling that include: *Increased cardiovascular fitness*Increased muscle strength and flexibility*Improved joint mobility*Decreased stress levels*Improved posture and coordination*Decreased body fat levels*Prevention or management of disease
Students will cycle a minimum of 45 minutes per week around the track at LHS and record their cycling progress. It is my estimation that APE students would ride a minimum of once a week, weather depending throughout the entire school year. Currently, we have four adult tricycles. I have worked at LHS since 2003 and the same bikes have been in use since before my employment began. It is my professional opinion that the APE students at Ledyard High School would greatly benefit and are deserving of this much needed upgrade in equipment.
