Book Sets for Reader's Workshop
Help us fund books for our K - 5 students!
Next year the district is purchasing the Units of Study for Teaching Reading by Lucy Calkins and providing training and professional development for teachers in grades 3-5 followed by implementation for our K-2 teams. My proposal is to purchase additional book sets and plastic storage bins for the book room at Gallup Hill School to support the implementation of Reader’s Workshop. One of the essential components of a successful Reader’s Workshop is high interest books for students to read independently and in book clubs. Recent budget constraints and freezes have made it difficult to purchase new book sets in order to keep the selection in the book room up to date and engaging for students. While we are very proud of our inventory and the organization of the book room, we are always looking to refresh old sets and purchase new books that students help to select. Students and teachers access the book room for high interest literary and informational texts, and the books are organized by level to aid teachers in appropriate text selection. These books support all units of study in the English/Language Arts Curricula.
Mrs. Motzko is the reading teacher for Gallup Hill School (GHS). GHS is currently home to about 325 students and will increase to nearly 700 students for the 2019-2020 school year.
