Code of Conduct

Team Kenya in collaboration with Karibuni eco-cottages wants to encourage a safe and pleasant atmosphere whilst you are at the cottages. This can only happen when everyone cooperates and commits to appropriate standards of behaviour and the code of conduct as stipulated below. Please read, sign and returned this form with your final booking form.

  • Respect the opinions and actions of people you interact with. Local communities may have different values and customs to you, so please reserve judgement and respect their opinions and beliefs.
  • It is important to dress appropriately whilst in the village, shorts and skirts must be a minimum of knee length, and all tops must be covered in (no vest tops or low cut tops). This is to avoid offending any villagers. Visitors without appropriately modest clothing will be asked to borrow suitable items.
  • Do not use bad language as local people are likely to find it offensive.
  • There are often shortages of water within the village, especially out of the rainy seasons. It is therefore essential that water is used sparingly at all times. This includes not washing hair or clothing every day.
  • All litter and rubbish is to be placed in rubbish bins around the cottages. Please recycle where possible (e.g. plastic water bottles). If you are visiting projects and no bins are available, please take any waste back to the cottages to dispose of.
  • Photographs and videos can be taken whilst at the cottages, but please ask any individuals their permission before taking photographs of them.
  • Money and gifts are not to be given to individuals. All money and gifts should be given to representatives of the charity at the cottages, and will then be distributed where necessary and most needed.
  • Please follow all health, safety and security advice, as well as all recommendations from the staff in Kenya.
  • Alcohol consumption is is not permitted during volunteering daytime hours. Moderate drinking in the evening is at the discretion of the group leader and Kenyan staff. Any abuse of alcohol or immoderate drinking will not be tolerated and sets a bad example to our beneficiaries. It is not permitted to buy Kenyan students alcohol. If you wish to buy a drink for an older Youth Group member or a staff member, prior permission from our Kenyan project management staff is required.
  • Some staff own motor bikes and locals sometimes use motorbike ‘taxis’, but helmets are rarely available and road conditions are poor. We advise you in the strongest possible terms not to ride on any motorbikes. Your insurance is highly unlikely to cover for this and we cannot take any responsibility should you ignore this advice.
  • Any behaviour of an aggressive nature or otherwise, towards staff, volunteers, students or village members will not be tolerated.
  • Any abusive behaviour of a verbal, emotional, physical or sexual nature towards children/young people will result in the immediate termination of your stay as well as police involvement if deemed necessary
  • We expect you to be careful when forming friendships and relationships with community members who may be vulnerable adults
  • The use of prostitutes is illegal and strictly prohibited; the local police will be informed.

I have read and agree to abide by the above code of conduct, whilst I am visiting Kenya and Karibuni eco-cottages with Team Kenya. I agree to contact julie@team-kenya.co.uk with any safeguarding concerns.
