Thank you for your interest in Trident Literacy!
Volunteers are the lifeblood of Trident Literacy and provide essential services to our organization, our students, and the community. In the last fiscal year at TLA, 147 volunteers contributed approximately 9,000 hours, valued at over $230,000.
Our current programming includes GED preparation and English as a Second Language.
Both programs are utilizing online learning at this time; our facilities are currently closed to "in-person" tutoring per CDC guidelines due to COVID-19. A working familiarity with Zoom or Google Meets is required at this time.
GED preparation: Basic GED preparation includes the following subjects: mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. Life skills, work skills and financial literacy are also included. Volunteers generally host 2 or 3 virtual sessions per week, tutoring, mentoring and/or keeping their students on track. Each session averages 1.5 hours and can be either one-to-one or a small group. All GED tutoring sessions are utilizing Google Meets at this time.
ESL: English as a Second Language classes generally have a teacher:student ratio of 1:5. Our ESL program complies with state and federal guidelines requiring tutors to commit to at least 6 hours per week per semester (5 months). Tutors must have a working knowledge of Zoom distance learning platform.
The next start date for ESL classes is in October 2020.
