World Cares Center's Puerto Rico Recovery and Resiliency Project

Give survivors a bottle of water, and they drink for a day.

Give them the tools to coordinate their own recovery and they can rebuild their lives, their community, and be prepared for future crisis.

World Cares Center is leading efforts and will open 13 Volunteer Reception and Resiliency Centers (VRC) in partnership with local community and faith leaders, Puerto Rican non-profit groups and the Mayors of Humacao and Punta Santiago to meet the most pressing needs of their communities.

Humacao and Toa Baja are the first two center locations to support locally lead recovery across the island.

VRC's are locally lead centers that serve to coordinate activities, assess and document the needs of neighbors, engage and manage groups including those from local universities such as UMET and University of Puerto Rico and more.

The VRC-utilized common management tools include the incident management system. The services the centers host are meant to change with the needs of the community and phases of the recovery. Historically, VRC's have hosted all types of volunteer organizations, received and distributed donations and offered training and services to the community in an equitable manner, meeting the needs of the most vulnerable first.

Partners include: Universidad Metropolitana, University of Puerto Rico, IMPACTIVO, Clever Media, AmeriCorps, the municipal mayors, faith-based leaders, local NGO's including PECES and community members.
